SF Fire House Draped in Mourning [ Blog Exclusive ]

San Francisco fire house, Engine Co. #2, decorated and draped in mourning for the US President William McKinley, who was assassinated on September 1, 1901. Firemen, including Chief Dennis Sullivan, center, and company horses can be seen in the doorway below.

The the right are the St. George stables, and the building on the left was the California Theatre and hotel. A few years after this photo was taken, during the massive 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the hotel’s chimney collapsed, crushing Chief Sullivan to death.
